Healthy Holiday Tips

The holidays are such a fun time of year and often you want to feel and look your best for all the upcoming parties in your calendar! We know from a Nova 96.9 survey that 80% of their listeners attend events with their friends and families over the holiday season. However with all the parties, comes drinking many cocktails and champagne along with canapés and heavy foods! It’s easy to gain weight over the holidays if you don’t watch your intake and you can end up feeling lethargic, stressed and like your jeans don’t fit as well as they used to, which lets be honest is not the best feeling in the world. The summer holidays are supposed to be a time of celebration, togetherness, and happiness. Yet, they can bring challenges to our physical and emotional health. We love the party season here at Party Affairs and we believe life is all about balance so we have come up with eight healthy holiday tips for staying healthy and happy during the party season so you can have your cake and eat it too, without feeling guilty!


#1. Healthy Holiday Tips to Eat Well


Temptation can be high around holiday time with all the gluttonous food surrounding you. It’s okay to treat yourself however the most important thing around the holiday season is to eat well. Fill yourself up on nourishing healthy foods and you will be less likely to reach for seconds. Your body will thank you for this. Christmas doesn’t have to be unhealthy. Fill your plate with lean protein such as turkey and of course lots of salad, then you can treat yourself to some Christmas Pudding without feeling guilty.





#2. Drink Water


Often when we feel pangs of hunger we are actually just thirsty! Many of us don’t fulfil our water intake for the day. You should aim to drink 8 glasses of water a day. If you feel hungry, have a glass of water first and see if your hunger goes away, if it does this means you are just thirsty! Keep up the H20, its the best thing you can drink and is amazing for your skin and flushing out all the toxins around the holiday season!


#3. Meditate


It’s easy to feel overwhelmed, anxious and stressed around the holiday season. This often leads to over indulging as you may turn to food to calm yourself down and make yourself feel better. Food isn’t the answer here. If you are feeling anxious around the holiday season try mediating. If you are new to mediating start out slow and practice just 5 minutes a day and build up your practice from there. Mediation does wonders for your mind and body! You might see your food cravings disappear as your replace negative thoughts with happy thoughts and clear your mind. You may think you don’t have time to meditate with all the holiday to do lists you have going on however don’t feel guilty; you have to take care of yourself before you can take of others.



#4. Go for a Walk


A walk can do wonders for your mind and soul while also helping to keep that waistline trim and burn some calories! A walk is also great for your digestive system which may be quite full after lunch!



#5. Grab a Workout Buddy


It can be hard to find the motivation to workout during the holidays, many of us just want to relax. However it’s important to remind yourself of the benefits of exercise at this time of year so you don’t slack off, just remember you will have to work even harder to lose the extra holiday pounds if you stop now. The best way to keep your motivation to exercise is to find a workout buddy! Knowing that someone is waiting for you to show up to your workout will hold you more accountable and your workouts will be that much more fun with a buddy by your side. Find something you both enjoy whether its walking, running, swimming, cycling, boxing, yoga or pilates!




#6. Practice Yoga


Yoga is a great holiday workout as you can do it anywhere! Grab a mat and practice in your living room, on the beach or in a park. Yoga is great for the mind and body and will help you destress while also strengthening and lengthening your body.



#7. Portion Control


It’s easy to just pile up the delicious food on your plate especially when there is so much to choose from and it all looks so amazing, but portion control can really help you from adding on the holiday weight. If you struggle with this, fill your plate with the healthiest foods first such as salad or fruit.



#8. Bake Healthy Treats


Holiday food doesn’t have to be unhealthy! Get adventurous in the kitchen and whip up some sugar free desserts or gluten and dairy free dishes. Not only will they taste amazing, they are actually full of goodness and a much healthier option for you and your family.

1 cup of raw, unsalted cashews
¼ cup of raw cacao powder
Dash of sea salt
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
1 tablespoon of coconut oil
6 medjool dates, with the seeds removed
